The customer had just moved into their Georgetown townhouse, built in the early 1900s and badly in need of a kitchen remodel. We had been planning for the remodel and went through five different designs, working towards finalizing, when the customer realized that a baby was on the way. We had to finish planning and complete the project quickly and on budget, before the baby arrived. Since the house fell under new EPA lead laws, we also had to be careful to take all necessary precautions learned through training to make sure our workers and homeowners were protected. We opened the wall between dining room and kitchen on one side of the room, to allow for an open feeling and a stand-alone, custom-made island with spice storage, decorative legs, corbels, a customized painted finish and wood top made by C&B Custom cabinetry. This provided more counter space, since the Madrigals are cooks, a centerpiece for the Vintage design, a splash of color, and openness. We kept part of the partition between rooms to allow for hiding the sink area, so that plates and dishes would remain concealed. Part of the design involved keeping an old 1920’s freezer box, from the times when ice used to be delivered daily from the outside. The homeowners loved this element, which added charm and vintage character. Our cabinets, a painted white with beat-board, Tatari’s private label of cabinets, were consistent with the freezer box’s style. The kitchen also featured stainless steel appliances and pendants, white carrera marble countertops and a green glass mosaic backsplash to match the island.
